SMB adoption of virtualization to outpace the enterprise

29% of their servers will be virtualized by the end of the year, a growth rate of 21% - 50% higher

Gartner report that predicted virtualizations adoption by enterprises is to increase by 14% over the same period.

In the UK, virtualization adoption is predicted to increase by 63%, with virtual machines accounting for almost a third (31%) of SMB servers by the end of 2012. A mere 13% of organizations in the UK still have no virtual servers in their current IT infrastructure.

2012 cloud usage predictions was far more grounded with just over one in four (29%) anticipating that more than 50% of their IT infrastructure will be cloud-based in 2012

V-index Q3 results show 86% of enterprises using virtualization

  • One of the key findings from the study was that 86% of all large scale enterprises were now using virtualization to some degree. 38% were using server virtualization and 34% virtual desktops.

  • That of the enterprises using server virtualization, 84% used VMware, 43% used Microsoft Hyper-V, 53% used Citrix Xen, and 16% used other hypervisors. Furthermore, of the enterprises using desktop virtualization, 75% used VMware, 45% used Microsoft Hyper-V, 56% used Citrix, and 7% used other hypervisors.

  • 81% of enterprises using virtualization expect to see their virtualized server estate to increase in the next 12 months

Barriers to increased virtualization penetration,

36% citing concerns about reliability

34% citing concerns around application performance

33% citing concerns around backup and restoration.

Virtualization Data Protection:


Key findings are:
  • 94% of CIOs say virtualization can transform data protection strategies
  • Top three barriers preventing increased server replication include cost of hardware (given by 60% of respondents), cost of replication software (52%) and complexity (42%)
  • For enterprises that deploy server replication, in the event of outages CIOs estimate cost savings on average of $417,391 per hour
  • 87% of CIOs say that recovery times from large-scale disasters are growing as the number of business critical servers within the enterprise increases 

Gartner says 40% of servers overall have been virtualized, but that the penetration will grow to 75% in 2015 and it’s for more than just costs
